Due to a railway union strike, travel to, from, and within the Helsinki Metropolitan Region will become notably more difficult during Monday the 14th and Tuesday the 15th, the days immediately following the convention. The strike will cause all train services except for the Allegro and Tolstoi services to Russia to cease from 18:00 (6 PM) on Monday until midnight Tuesday. This includes the commuter train service to the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
All services running on Monday that depart at or before 18:00 will travel to their final destinations and make their regular stops. Services will resume on Wednesday morning, but there may be changes in train types or cancelled departures.
VR, the Finnish national railway service provider, has published a statement in Finnish citing that the effects of the strike may change as things develop. We will be monitoring the situation and will try to get information on any major changes that might affect Worldcon attendees out to our members as quickly as possible.
If you have pre-purchased a ticket for a specific train during the time of the strike, VR has stated that you can have your ticket exchanged for another one free of charge by contacting their ticketing services either in person at any of their ticket sales counters (such as the ones at the Central Railway Station) or by phone (+358 800 166 888, operating hours 7 AM – 10 PM). VR will not offer any reimbursements for having to use alternative means of travel during this time.
We recommend planning for alternative modes of transport as soon as possible: the lack of commuter train services will affect Helsinki transit a great deal, and congestion is very likely. It is best to give yourself ample time to get to the airport regardless of what mode of transportation you select. The most direct approach is to order a taxi (your hotel can most likely call you one), but the bus 615 runs from the Central Railway Station to the airport with minimal stops. Bus lines 415 and 617 also service the airport during the daytime. Between 2 AM and 4:30 AM, the lines 615, 415N and 562N service the airport. All bus services to the airport will require purchase of a HSL Region ticket. Check the HSL Journey Planner to see if these buses are reasonable options for you.
